Fashion series, 150x650 cm, oil on canvas, 2008.

Fashion series, 300x400 cm, oil on canvas, 2008. Alex Katz "Fashion" solo exhibition: on view from January 14 to February 14 at Thaddaeus Ropac gallery. Born in 1927, Alex Katz is an American Pop-adjacent artist known for his portraits and fashion figures, presented through individual or collective portraits within a bold, simplified, flat, and color-field decorative style. The "Fashion" solo exhibition presents a series of portraits of slender ladies dressed in fashion, where color fields and chiaroscuro contrast define his delicate and poetic style. He emphasizes that the inspiration for this painting comes from the Japanese ukiyo-e painter Kitagawa Utamaro, while referencing other art forms such as music, photography, cinema, dance, and poetry. Repetitive compositions, akin to photography or film, sometimes feature the model's image multiple times within the same frame. These portraits carry a social perspective, derived from the artist's simple observation of people around him—actors, models, and artist friends. Naturally, Ada, the artist's wife, is often his muse; she is undoubtedly central to his work. For fifty years, his focus on portraiture has led the artist to question whether the portrait is truly the subject; rather, style is the content of the work, because by affirming personal style, he "empties his feelings and his content." The artist states: "I am interested in current fashion and trends. Fashion leaves one with soot on one's face, because people expect artists to create eternal beauty. Beauty is an unchanging element and will remain consistent. When it comes to fashion trends, it involves certain phenomena; because it changes frequently, nothing is certain."
