Bill Viola Grand Palais Retrospective: Dates: March 5 to July 21. Venue: Grand Palais, National Gallery. Text and images by Chen Chi-Hsiang.

"Scenery connects to what is outside me and within our self." (Bill Viola, Reasons for Knocking at an Empty House, Journal, p.253)

A pioneer of video art, Bill Viola is a painter who created a new palette of digital and technical colors to create moving pictures, recorded in a unique art history where he intersects with masters: from Goya to Giotto, via Jerome Bosch. His artistic path is equally a technical and formal adventure. A history of media creation, now ubiquitous in contemporary art. Bill Viola has exhibited in all major museums worldwide, but this is his first retrospective in France, and the first major exhibition dedicated to video art in the National Gallery's history.

"If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, Infinite." (William Blake (1757-1827), cited by Bill Viola, Journal 1979-S3)

This exhibition presents all works from 1977 to 2013, all genres, and all symbolic series. The artist aims to create a condition of "immersion" in the image, symbolically expressed through the cyclical metaphor of the body immersed in water. The exhibition invites the audience to immerse themselves in the desires of all stations of travel, and the fascinating multi-faceted journey of the mind, granting this imagination. The above short text is translated from the introduction to the Bill Viola Grand Palais Retrospective.
