Dan Walsh "New Paintings" Solo Exhibition
Grotto 140x140cm 2010

Dan Walsh "New Works" Solo Exhibition: May 29 to July 31 at Xippas Gallery. Dan Walsh (born 1960) is one of the most representative painters of the new American abstract painting. Since the 1990s, amidst this painting storm emphasizing anecdotal and literary qualities, he has developed a minimalist geometric abstract painting.
Through geometric (vertical or parallel) lines, concentric squares, grid forms, and contrasting color planes, he constructs an organized geometric structural abstract painting that is quite planar. Through repetitive imagery, he intensifies the surface vision, approaching the structure of Op Art, but differing in that it lacks retinal illusion.
Dan Walsh's geometric painting connects to a relationship with real-world functions: atmosphere, memory, the personal, or phantoms similar to the repeated orthogonal and dominant frames of screens in our daily lives. Within this minimalist formal structure, the artist emphasizes color tension and energy, exploring various possibilities of color and chromatic difference.
He often overlays a series of color gradations or contrasting colors on a neutral gray, achieving an effect that is lyrical and unimaginable. Because he uses acrylic paint, intentional or unintentional traces of sensibility are often left on the color planes and forms, making the geometric color planes more sensual and lyrical.
This innovative painting, which converges Minimalism, Op Art, and De Stijl, causes the viewer to oscillate between the new construction of the surface process and its overall perception, awakening an inner spirit through color intensity and energy.
