"The Park" 213×308 cm, 1894. Held at the Musée d'Orsay, Paris. Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940) was a Nabi painter, educated at the Julian Academy where he met fellow Nabis. Early on influenced by Gauguin's Synthetism, what truly captivated him were Japanese woodblock prints; their patterned forms and color-field palettes resonated with the aesthetics and symbols of Art Nouveau. The Park series consists of five panels commissioned by Alexandre Natanson for decoration in his hotel. Characteristic of Nabi painting, these works are highly decorative, flat, and use color fields to narrate the pleasant afternoon leisure of Parisian women and children in the park.
