One of the series "As I run and run, happiness comes closer". 114x146 cm. Oil on canvas. 2008. Fiona Rae solo exhibition: at Nathalie Obadia Gallery from January 10 to February 24. Born in Hong Kong in 1963, Fiona Rae is a representative Pop Abstract painter of the 1990s in Britain. Growing up and studying in the UK, her rich life experience spanning Europe and Asia enriches her visual language and imaginative space. Since the 1990s, she has demonstrated habitual forms and methods of exploring the broad possibilities of painting, forcing all possible graphics and images onto the canvas, constructing a powerful, complex, and extraordinary abstract painting. For example, in early series such as "Hong Kong Garden" and "Swag", colorful graphics and images resemble templates of adventure travel books; the artist freely combines and constructs an encyclopedia of images, flowing with rhythm, creating a unique style within Pop Abstraction.
Fiona Rae's new series "As I run and run, happiness comes closer" continues to expand the impossible possibilities of contemporary painting art. With increasingly overlapping images and informational symbols resembling a chaotic world map, indistinct shapes and color fields under the large abstract structure, in complex spaces, careful reading reveals concrete symbols such as urban neon signs, natural plants and flowers, pandas, flowing clouds and water, and changing universes, etc., which present personal autobiographical aspects like travel memories or stories read and told. Art critic Nicolas Bourriaud describes this kind of painting as "layered space, nomadic... we show the satellite navigation of the world."
