Text and photos by Chen Chi-Hsiang. The imagery of "bamboo" among the Four Gentlemen in traditional Chinese ink painting finds its narrative counterpart in Gabriel Orozco’s 2013 sculptural masterpiece. Poetic and picturesque, it is both light and ethereal, possessing a strong atmosphere and imagery reminiscent of traditional Chinese ink painting. Clearly, the development of Chinese ink painting has long been heavily constrained by the weight of tradition, making breakthroughs difficult and leaving it trapped within conventional frameworks. Artist Gabriel Orozco seems to offer one possibility for expanding ink painting through narrative, context, materials, space, and atmosphere, potentially providing a way out of the long-standing dilemmas of traditional ink painting.
