Text and images by Chen Chi-Hsiang. George Segal (1924–2000): His sculptures were not carved but created through direct life casting of subjects, as if he could not trust what his eyes saw. In exhibitions of his white plaster figures, he often arranged found objects to create scenes that matched the intended atmosphere, immersing viewers in an environmental art concept that gave form to the idea of "what already exists." His work hovered on the edge of this category, as he believed art should engage all the viewer's senses, not just sight.
