Helmut Dorner (born 1952) is one of Germany's deconstructive abstract painters, known in the 1980s for his somber tones and distinctive geometric forms. In the 1990s, he experimented with new media—transparent acrylic boards and glossy lacquer—to renew the characteristics of painting, continuing to develop his organic geometric structures and bright, acidic colors. Under the effect of transparent supports, he creates an extraordinary form of painting. This exploration of signs has a close relationship with material supports, organization, color, light and shadow, transparency and opacity, as well as their relationship to hanging space. In this new series, Dorner continues to develop the possibilities of these materials, exploring various formal symbols through intentional and unintentional accidents of sensibility. Diverse overlapping colors create infinite richness and variation, opening up a world of matter and light. Through transparent and opaque supports, diagonals and lines, contrasting colors, light, and walls form an extraordinary dialogue, conveying the current possibilities of post-painting abstraction within the rhythm of tension, color, and material.
