"Floating World Scenes" works on paper, 161.5x160.5 cm, 2009. Jorge Queiroz "Floating World Scenes" solo exhibition: On view from October 17 to November 21 at Nathalie Obadia Gallery. Jorge Queiroz (born 1966) is one of Portugal's most representative painters currently residing in Berlin. He stood out in the 2003 Venice Biennale theme "Stowaways," participated in the São Paulo Biennial the following year, and held a retrospective at the Serralves Museum in Porto, Portugal, in 2007. This is his third solo exhibition at a Paris gallery.
Jorge Queiroz excels in works on paper, skillfully using pencil, charcoal, watercolor, ink, and other media to create complex, network-like spatial connections within narrative scenes that are both figurative and abstract, filled with magical surreal settings. His fantasy worlds are crowded with unusual, ineffable objects and body fragments, contrasting recognizable elements with those difficult to confirm, much like a mysterious, chaotic, and turbulent scene. The artist says: "They exist within a narrative structure where structure dominates the unknown, just as it involves a construction, allowing realization to retain an enigmatic quality, appearing and disappearing between image and form."
