Kiki Smith (born 1954) is one of the most representative artists of the American 1990s and a feminist whose work revolves around female consciousness. Her practice is highly diverse, employing all possible artistic techniques and media—drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, video, ceramics, printmaking, and objects—to explore bodies, organs, animals, and plants. In this new series "Capturing Shadows," Smith combines eyes with human and animal figures to create extraordinary visual content. Two monumental bronze reliefs depict frontal nude women with multiple hands and curving lines, resembling modern prophetesses or seers. A video work addresses the same theme. The series includes a sequence of eye-shaped reliefs, photographs, and drawings titled "Capturing Shadows," aiming to present multi-layered readings, further enriched by the accompanying prints that fully interpret the artist's spiritual consciousness.
