Lisa Ruyter's "The comfort of strangers" solo exhibition is on view at Thaddaeus Ropac gallery from January 12 to February 17. Born in 1968, Lisa Ruyter is a young American artist active in the Vienna art scene, known for her bold, colorful, and decorative paintings. Since 1996, she has used her photography as an element for painting, projecting images to outline forms before applying subjective flat colors. She constructs her paintings within structured color fields, transforming narrative imagery into abstraction, converting ordinary photographs into extraordinary visual worlds that fully express thematic emotion and imagination. Her subjects often depict street scenes, crowds, festivals, and gatherings from daily life, mostly derived from films to reinforce implicit connotations. This creates a space between post-Pop reality and imagination, figuration and abstraction, painting and image. The artist says: "I want to create a style that preserves the immediacy of reality or provides equally outstanding connections from the perspective of art historians and those who have never been interested in art."
