Matthias Bitzer "The Mercury Window" Solo Exhibition: May 6 to June 22 at Almine Rech Gallery. Matthias Bitzer (born 1975) is a new generation German artist engaged in diverse creation: drawing, painting, sculpture, and installation. His overall works begin with the construction and reconstruction of reality through memory, centering on history and identity. Notably, his artistic inspiration and spatial references are often marginally established upon historical figures; for instance, his recent work uses mid-20th-century Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa as a theme. Bitzer utilizes these writers and poets as a subsidiary theme to strengthen the discourse and depth of his works. Here he presents a series of drawings in geometric symmetrical op-art forms composed of numerous circles, cleverly integrating the writer's portrait into kaleidoscopic abstract geometric forms, manifesting a contradictory situation between abstraction and figuration. In sculpture, figurative forms are deconstructed to create organic forms and dramatic volumes from curves and spirals, breaking away from all modernist concepts to establish an extraordinary atmosphere reflecting the incomprehensible signs of writer Pessoa. Furthermore, the linear atmosphere of the sculptures is transformed into his monumental paintings: black-and-white linear drawings combined with small geometric color plane structures, existing in the ambiguity between abstraction and figuration, sensibility and rationality, absence and presence. Finally, when planning the overall space, Bitzer specifically highlights the coexistence of the intersecting areas among drawing, painting, and sculpture.
