Born in 1924, Philip Pearlstein is a pioneer of American 1970s Superrealism (now 83 years old). Parisian art lovers are somewhat unfamiliar with this veteran artist, as this is a grand solo show after nine years.
We are not unfamiliar with Philip Pearlstein's paintings. In his style of cold and impersonal works such as "Interior Scenes Double Portraits," he has shown particular affection for nude women since 1962, consistently exploring realistic depictions of living models throughout his life. Philip Pearlstein is the only Superrealist painter who does not use photographs or slide images for depiction. He often arranges living models in indoor scenes of daily home life, using natural and indoor light to render detailed, objective realism. This presents skin tones with transparency that appear somewhat cold and stiff rather than natural. However, within his rigorous and perfect image segmentation—sometimes where limbs extend beyond the frame—he constructs flawless forms, abstract structural rigor, dramatic lighting, contrasting interior spaces, rhythmic and excellent compositions, and narrative scenes, resembling camera lens imagery.
Recently, male models and indoor objects (dogs, toys, exotic statues, Oriental carpets, tables and chairs, etc.) have occupied decorative proportions and positions, creating a close, interactive relationship between the human body and indoor objects. Between models and objects, volume and surface, form and color, and the figurative and abstract, a new unified image unfolds.
