Text/Photos by Chen Chi-Hsiang. Exhibition period: September 22 to November 22. Location: In front of the Quai Branly Museum. The World Photography Biennale was founded by the Quai Branly Museum. This is its fifth edition, marking ten years of history, which is worthy of applause. In just three months in 2011, it attracted 440,000 visitors; in 2013, nearly 530,000 visited. Such success is hard to imagine.

This photography biennale is open-air, without roofs, accessible regardless of wind or rain, located on the banks of the Seine near the Eiffel Tower. The museum is founded on world cultures, collecting classic artifacts of non-Western civilizations (including old photographs and contemporary images from non-Western regions). It is currently one of the most beautiful indigenous museums in the West.

Clearly, the World Photography Biennale is built on everyday imagery, avoiding the creative exploration aspects of contemporary art, expressing a unique aesthetic value perspective. Since its founding in 2007, Photoquai has allowed Europeans to see African, Asian, Atlantic, or American photography that had been overlooked. Through the biennale, it promotes exchange and builds a beautiful new world, enriching the museum's photographic collection.

From nearly 10,000 candidates on the EyeEm website, 40 photographers from all over the globe were carefully selected. Taiwanese photographers such as Chen Chao-Liang and Pastor Lan have exhibited in previous editions. This year’s young curator is Frank Kalero (who also curated the last edition). He continues to expand on his previous theme "Look at Me," presenting the feature "We Are a Family," full of warmth and cohesive power. Indeed, family is sacred; here, "family" is not just about bloodline but is macroscopic, extending from the household to the concept of a social community, questioning the relationship between individuals and communities. This theme proposes that in today’s globalization, the world should be a large family, united, living in peace, and jointly building the future world.
