Text and photos by Chen Chi-Hsiang. My encounter with Wu Chi-Tsung’s works took place at a group exhibition at Taiyu Aesthetics Hall in Chiayi. I was attracted by his small-scale video pieces that dialogue with traditional Chinese painting; their poetic imagery updated the perception of ink wash, subverted traditional forms and concepts, leaving an indelible impression.

Unexpectedly, late last summer, while passing through Paris with Mr. and Mrs. Zeng Yongning, I finally had the opportunity to get to know him better. We gathered at my home for dinner and chatted all night, growing closer. Curious about his new media creations, I used Facebook to gain a preliminary understanding of his work and persona. Before returning to Paris this year, we made an appointment; I traveled north specifically to visit his studio as part of my research and writing project.

Following the visit and a constructive interview about his creative process, I was able to outline the contours of his artistic exploration within his new media practice.
