Text and photos by Chen Chi-Hsiang. Every time I go to the countryside during summer vacation, I encounter the annual community clearance auction market in neighboring villages. If possible, I go treasure hunting, which also allows me to visit small rural villages, grounding myself in deep observation of the land and geographical environment while unexpectedly wandering through them. The village auction markets provide more opportunities to see France’s picturesque countryside and charming small villages.

The community clearance auction market has become one of the activities in my rural summer life. Each town holds its market at different times (all on Saturdays). I have visited almost all the neighboring villages, each with its own characteristics. The rural clearance markets also reveal local attributes, featuring antique dealers and residents. This past Saturday, seeking leisure and tranquility, I went to treasure hunt in Armaux, a small village with clear mountains and beautiful waters. The clearance auction market runs along the banks of the Yonne River. In this natural theater of the countryside, it is unique with auction stalls lining both sides. I leisurely slow down my pace, flipping through items here and there to find treasures, while satisfyingly admiring this beautiful river, truly enjoying every moment.
