Creative Change of the Social Game Rules
Tree Basketball A/LTA architects le trionnaire(X2)-tassot-le chapelain

Text and photos by Chen Chi-Hsiang. Creativity can not only change cities, but also alter social game rules and sensory experiences of life, awakening people's awareness and consciousness, making daily life warmer and more harmonious. This multi-functional basketball court, shaped like a tree, has five hoops at different heights, symbolizing that old, middle-aged, young, and children can all play together or compete in groups, breaking traditional basketball rules to become a field for collective social games. As public art under the concept of combining art and sports, this public space where people of all ages gather is a masterpiece that allows both pure appreciation and active participation in games and sports. I encountered this piece during my trip to Nantes, France, as part of a series of public art visits on Île de Nantes (the former industrial island). Île de Nantes (located at the former Banana Docks) is world-renowned for its innovative large-scale mechanical animals that combine art with leisure and entertainment. (I will share more about my experiences there another time.)
