Paris offers endless exhibitions, concerts, and theater performances, alongside countless business and art salons, giving Parisians ample choices and keeping them constantly busy. While outdoor advertisements are ubiquitous, occasionally extraordinary art exhibitions emerge. Yet, do people really care whether it is an advertisement or an art show? After all, all images and texts convey information; this is the frequent communication channel of mass media, through which artistic messages sometimes also reach the public via such strategies. In January, at the fountain building wall of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, I saw this large poster with political connotations, surprisingly presented in the form of construction scaffolding, pointing out the reality and tragedy of Israel building high walls along the Palestinian border in Bethlehem to isolate two ethnic groups. Many years have passed since the fall of the Berlin Wall, yet in the Middle East, Israel continues to defend itself or close itself off behind high walls, suffocating Palestinians within their narrow territory. It is hard to imagine that these high walls not only separate borders but also isolate people’s hearts, causing constant confrontation and conflict between two worlds. I hope that one day, like the Berlin Wall, these high walls will be reclaimed by freedom and peace; this is my greatest dream and wish for this year.
