French local elections will hold voting next Sunday, on March 9 and 16. In this quiet political debate, information is mostly conveyed through mass media, not affecting people's lives at all. Without campaign convoys or loudspeaker noise, except for party workers handing out flyers occasionally at markets, supermarkets, or subway entrances, French local elections proceed almost silently. Naturally, politically enthusiastic individuals and party members have their own sources of political information; otherwise, the public can only understand the local election platforms and critical debates through mass media.
The local elections across France have entered the final week of political confrontation. The Paris municipal election is ready, with polling stations—mostly primary and secondary schools—already displaying regional election signage and candidate posters at their entrances. My arrondissement, the 13th, has ten groups of candidates, ranging from the far-left to the far-right: LCR (Revolutionary Communist League), Workers' Party, Combat Workers' Party, Socialist Party, Green Party, centrist MoDem, right-wing UMP, and most notably, Asian Chinese independent candidate Felix Wu. According to polls, in this year's local elections, the left-wing Socialist alliance is expected to achieve remarkable public support due to the current governing party's ineffective reforms, low social purchasing power, and sluggish economic growth. However, until votes are counted, no one should easily trust these polls; upsets often occur in the "gutter" of elections. The Paris Socialist Party also hopes to maintain its advantage in this election battle. This contest between left and right will be decided in the first round next Sunday.
