During the summer holidays, Paris becomes a global tourist hub. Visitors from around the world flood into the city, making all tourist attractions unusually bustling. Tourism is Paris’s most important industry, with its cultural heritage and historic sites serving as its primary assets. During this peak season, other sectors seem to pause; even the usually noisy political sphere slows down, with Parliament adjourning for the summer break. This quiet period offers the least political gossip of the year, granting the public some peace.

China seemed indifferent to Western pressure, having become a major power with a 10% annual economic growth rate, leading the world economy. Under the pressure of real economic interests, President Sarkozy reluctantly attended the ceremony for only a few hours, seemingly bound by China’s trade leverage. Perhaps this was an unavoidable realism to protect EU political and economic interests, given his role as EU Council President.
