Text and photos by Chen Chi-Hsiang. Stefan Bruggeman's solo exhibition "Decorative Conceptual Art" runs from May 22 to July 18 at the Yvon Lambert gallery. Born in Mexico in 1967, Stefan Bruggeman is one of the most conceptual artists today, skilled in using text-based work to explore novel conceptual forms under an active critical spirit; his art creation is akin to contemplating a perfect world. His exploration revolves around our relationship with society, continuing negative constructions within a visage where nihilism outweighs romanticism: form implicates the end of myth and its faith, encompassing the act of creation. His work sometimes cruelly references our society's unmasked abandonment of individuals facing themselves.

In this first Paris solo exhibition "Decorative Conceptual Art," Stefan Bruggeman prints the theme "Decorative Conceptual Art" onto wallpaper like an image, then covers the entire wall with it. From a distance, viewers see only a dense field of gray code-like graphics; only up close can the words "Decorative Conceptual Art" be clearly seen. Here, the artist uses bourgeois decadent surface decoration to cite the concept's "appearance." Through comprehended concepts manifesting physically, their irreconcilable nature reveals: a complex atmosphere and meaning that are indistinguishable, making it impossible to identify independent functions.
