Japanese top artist and Pop Art master Takashi Murakami (born 1962) is one of the most dazzling stars in today's global contemporary art scene. Murakami is an artist who unapologetically brings the entire context of Japanese culture onto the stage of contemporary art. Through his unique visual symbols, he expresses the beauty and cruelty of youth. Famous for his currently cute, bizarre, cartoon-style colorful art, he is deeply influenced by Japanese anime, video games, manga, and ukiyo-e. He excels at appropriating and transforming folk traditional images and mass media and culture, combining popular culture to construct his unique style of cute, sweet, humorous, and witty techniques. Between East and West, past and modern, folk and elite cultures, his strong cartoon and comic colors present not only the unique cultural connotations of contemporary Japan but also satirize the mediocrity and superficiality of the disillusioned reality of globalization.
Murakami stated clearly: "In the future society, customs, art, and culture will all become extremely two-dimensional like Japan... Today, Japanese video games and cartoon animations best express this characteristic, and these have powerful influence in world culture." His cute and bizarre comic-style images actually mock increasingly shallow and superficial popular culture—flat and lacking depth. It is precisely this seriousness and critique behind such playful mockery that makes him one of the hottest and most controversial artists internationally today. (Quote from Wikipedia)
