In 'Toilette,' Toulouse-Lautrec uses free and lively lines, sensual color planes, and a rigorous organizational structure to poetically depict the back view of a woman grooming herself. She faces freely within the interior space, and through the perfect arrangement of indoor objects, becomes an original work. In his later period, Toulouse-Lautrec painted many back views of young women; these poetic and artificial subjects recall the works of Degas.
