"Moon Rising from the West" Black Mask Sculpture 96x67x30cm 2004. Ugo Rondinone's "Silent Life" solo exhibition is on view at Almine Rech Gallery from September 12 to October 15. In this new show, Rondinone presents a series of new works featuring three massive, heavy "Wooden Door" object-sculptures inspired by medieval castles. Glazed entirely in black, these pieces feature symmetrical geometric structures of vertical and parallel wooden planks mounted on white walls. These anomalous objects resemble abstract paintings, bridating the concrete and abstract, object and painting, time and space, while evoking poetic imagination.

Eleven "Azure Starry Sky Paintings" depict a profound cosmic universe filled with dense starlight shining against deep blackness. The majestic azure sky metaphorically suggests a time tunnel and endless space, hinting within a romantic and abstract world that humanity must cherish the planet upon which it survives. Three "Moon Rising from the West" black mask sculptures explore poetic themes referencing primitive human conditions. These powerful totemic statues seem to originate from childhood innocence or ancient civilizations never lost, echoing grotesque carnival masks. With symbolic large eyes and playful mouths, they humorously yet satirically allude to worldly fickleness and hypocrisy.
