The Most Classic Islamic Gardens of the Bajos del Generalife
The summer residence complex of the most classic Islamic gardens, the Bajos del Generalife, on the hills of Granada.

Text and photos by Chen Chi-Hsiang. The Jardines Bajos del Generalife in Granada are a sight worth seeing more than hearing about; this lush, dense natural theater is a model of paradise on earth. In the 13th century, while the West was still in darkness, the dawn of Islamic civilization had already lit up the Iberian Peninsula. Beside the unique and brilliant Alhambra Palace, another hilltop holds a magnificent treasure of Islamic gardens for leisure and enjoyment, laid out with absolute mathematics and superior geometric planning to create an Eden.
The garden scene resembles a fairyland, where pools and fountains become the soul of the entire courtyard. Water channels divide into geometric forms, crossing through plant forests, with colorful seasonal flower beds planted on both sides. Various cross-shaped fountains combine with unique architectural groups resembling gateways, forming natural symphonies and scenes amidst the murmuring water. Poetic and picturesque, pleasing to the eye and captivating, they make visitors linger and forget to return. Upon careful tasting and sincere experience, one realizes this is indeed heaven on earth.
