War is depicted as a woman riding a black horse; she spans the entire large canvas, holding a torch and a sword in her left and right hands to symbolize death. On this desolate and cruel battlefield, piles of corpses lie horizontally while greedy black crows peck at them; broken, exposed trees, dark leaves, and dry land are no exception, their plundered, desolate landscape inspiring awe. In the work, Rousseau handles color planes, perfectly capturing the tragic imagery of war within contrasting blacks, reds, and grays. Regarding this painting, Rousseau explained: "War, it is such a terrifying experience, leaving despair, weeping, and destruction everywhere."
