Fabienne Verdier’s Innovative Calligraphic “Painting” Solo Exhibition
Monumental form, June 7 painting, 183x440 cm, 2009

Calligraphic form "Rhythm and Reflection," 175.5x251 cm, 2008. Fabienne Verdier’s solo exhibition of “painting” was on view at Jaeger Bucher Gallery from October 23 to January 9, 2010. Born in 1962, Fabienne Verdier is a rare contemporary European painter who creates works in the form of calligraphy. This exhibition featured three main themes: lines; time-space; and trees and heat (a tribute to Flemish masters). Verdier deeply admires Chinese culture, especially Chinese painting and calligraphy, having studied art in China for decades. She has profound insight into Chinese painting and calligraphy art, delving into the essence of these arts, particularly the unique brushstrokes, rhythm, and cadence of Chinese calligraphy. Integrating Eastern and Western cultures, she immerses herself in the inner spiritual consciousness of the East, establishing a unique painting style based on the beautiful tradition and refined techniques of Chinese calligraphy. Her distinctive calligraphic painting presents the essence of Eastern culture alongside Western modernity. Within the great tradition of Chinese calligraphy, she also references the bold, passionate, and emotional painting experiences of mid-century American Abstract Expressionist masters such as Tobey, Kline, Pollock, and de Kooning. Her obvious intuition and instinct are influenced by French lyrical abstract painters like Michaux and Degottex.
Verdier’s works present a substantial balance and stability, with powerful, expressive, and rough brushstrokes full of sensibility. Her elegant and sharp imagery features magnificent calligraphic forms and the spirit of Abstract Expressionism. The paintings carry a vibrating reality, with layered compositions revealing an infinitely ethereal field, radiating sometimes intense reds, sometimes rippling greens, and sometimes settled whites. Instinctive and sensual free-forms maintain a substantial balance, creating a living metaphysical structure that resonates with consciousness between heaven and earth and the energy of painting under the contrast of expressive black ink. This allows viewers to immerse themselves in the alchemy of painting, where diverse and changing movement forms permit an extraordinary metaphysical experience.
Fabienne Verdier states: “My recent exploration involves contemplating the origin of life, the structures emerging from spontaneity, movement, turning points, and the birth of dynamic forms. Accompanied by the fluidity of large brushes, the landscape becomes a physical atlas ordering geographical spirit, becoming our body for viewing the world.” She continues: “The characteristic of painting is not to copy the appearance of mountains and water, but to evoke a feeling in the viewer’s heart, allowing them to immerse themselves in a contemplative process of realistic scenery.”
