Michael Sailstorfer "No Light" Solo Exhibition
"No Light" series, black fluorescent tube installation, 2008

The "No Light" series features the "Popcorn Machine," an object-sculpture from 2008. Michael Sailstorfer's solo exhibition "No Light" is on display at Emmanuel Perrotin from January 17 to March 7. Born in 1979, Michael Sailstorfer is one of Germany's most representative young contemporary artists. His hyper-physical, synthetic object-sculptures are built upon deconstruction, construction, displacement, and transformation that open up imaginative spaces. With a touch of humor, playfulness, and narrative, his work is absurd yet poetic. For the artist, sculpture is a metaphorical art form.
In works such as Endless Column (2006), Time is no Highway-Berlin (2006), and Musical S (2008), he uses extraordinary materials, including immaterial elements like sound, energy, scent, and light. A wheel rubbing against a wall, a vibrating concrete block containing a microphone, or a popcorn machine continuously ejecting kernels create tension through a method of substantial opposition. Dramatically revealing the invisible and excessive between the visible and hidden, material and elusive, space and time, these optimistic and synthetic works demonstrate a hyper-physical possibility and spatial, architectural intent to develop the phenomenology of rational phenomena. The artist states: "I am interested in the problem and method of sculpture itself; a sculpture can diffuse infinitely and be vaster than the space it occupies."
