Text and photos by Chen Chi-Hsiang. In the past, elections have always been times of social turbulence or growing pains for Taiwan. However, this presidential and legislative election was unusually calm. There were no chaotic seas of flags or campaign posters on the streets, and even those annoying propaganda vehicles were scarce. Without threats from corporate monopolies or external intimidation, society lacked the intensity and conflict of the past. Gratefully, there were no bullets or dirty tricks; all scare tactics had failed. Sensationalist language and slogans in political commentary were no longer popular, and ticket sales were no longer so arrogant.

Taiwanese society generally saw an awakening of public wisdom, and democratization continued to deepen on this land. Change is not impossible in Taiwan. Congratulations to Ms. Tsai Ing-wen and Mr. Chen Chien-jen on their election as the 14th President and Vice President. The DPP won its first majority in parliament. Taiwan has entered a new political system and faces new challenges. Let us turn "tolerance" into "inclusiveness," move from "reconciliation" to "harmony," shake off tragedy, show confidence, and face our future. Taiwan has the confidence and wisdom to build a beautiful nation. I pray for my beloved Taiwan—peace and prosperity for the people.
