Matisse - Decorative Figuration
Henri Matisse, Decorative Figuration, 130×98 cm, 1925–1926. Collection of the Musée National d'Art Moderne, Paris.

In this colorful and dazzling work, the characteristics of Fauvism are clearly displayed. Here, Matisse abandons traditional object depiction and perspective; without a dominant subject, it is filled with bright, harmonious, and rich colors. The nude woman and all interior objects are merged into decorative patterns, appearing quite flat, seemingly expressing the painter's joy.
Matisse wrote: "What I dream of is an art of balance, pure and tranquil, free from troubling or depressing subjects, an art that could be for every mental worker, whether merchant or writer, like a restful armchair which affords physical repose."
