Taiwan’s Orchid Garden to the World
The 2011 Taiwan International Orchid Show (Part 1)

Taiwan, a beautiful treasure island, boasts picturesque scenery and a spring-like climate year-round, with abundant natural resources. Its people are open-minded, creative, and inquisitive. Taiwanese manufacturing is renowned globally; before mainland China opened up, Taiwan was the world’s factory, but it has since transformed into an advanced technology hub, producing electronic and digital products worldwide while leading in biotechnology, establishing itself as a newly prosperous developing nation.
Taiwan’s pride extends beyond new tech and biotech to its vibrant agriculture and fisheries. Although agriculture is no longer the mainstay of this beautiful island, continuous R&D yields numerous emerging products. The fertile land produces abundant, sweet, and flavorful fruits and vegetables across all seasons, alongside notable aquaculture like milkfish and tilapia. It is truly a beautiful and happy island, blessed by heaven.
Supported by advanced biotechnology, Taiwan’s agricultural output has achieved significant quality and quantity improvements. The island exports four major products globally: orchids, oolong tea, mangoes, and tilapia, which form the cornerstone of international trade. Among these, orchids are the most prominent. Taiwan can be described as a dazzling orchid garden in today’s global village, with orchids topping export lists and holding an indispensable share of the global market, particularly in Europe, America, and Japan, alongside other flowers like chrysanthemums.
Taiwan’s orchid cultivation, varieties, and technical development attract global attention. New varieties are released annually, drawing buyers and growers to the International Orchid Show, a spectacle of floral competition. Held each early spring in the Tainan Sugar Company’s Orchid Special Zone in Houbi District—the island’s most concentrated production area—the 2011 exhibition was a visual feast from March 5 to 14. Spanning ten days, it attracted thousands and featured four pavilions: Orchid Elegance, Competition, Splendor, and Dreams. The Orchid Elegance pavilion was the highlight, featuring large-scale scenic displays that showcased rare, precious, and unique varieties from around the world, along with stories, growth secrets, technological innovations, and floral designs. Notable were native species, especially the captivating "Taiwan Grandma" orchid with its profuse white blooms and poetic phalaenopsis, unique exports that bring prestige and value to Taiwan.
Clearly, the world cannot do without Taiwan, whether in technology or agricultural biotech. Looking locally while blooming globally, Taiwan is indeed the colorful orchid garden of the world. Do you not feel proud to be Taiwanese? I deeply feel proud and happy to be one. Sharing these magnificent images to convey beauty to bloggers, I give thanks and wish peace and happiness to my country and the world. Finally, once again, praying for Japan.
