The two world wars brought people not only broken landscapes, the fall of nations, the rise and fall of lives, and physical trauma. More heart-stopping was the despair of the human heart, spiritual pain, the emptiness, absurdity, collapse of values, and loss of humanity in a void of hopelessness. As the famous French writer M. Aragon pointed out: "Modernity is an awareness of neuralgia; an era is where one must exert and explore." However, abstract art in the 1950s pioneered precisely this point. The metaphysical intent presented by post-war abstract painting was a response to the history of their time. Humanity's quest for self-esteem and spirituality, severely traumatized between 1939 and 1945, may have been treated through art that transcended material forms.

After civilization passed through dark, barren wastelands, it arrived at the inner abyss of humanity. After World War II, all human civilization gradually moved toward disillusionment. Art at that time attempted self-liberation from the human mind, using pure form and color to present a sensual language in the metaphysical spiritual realm, tending toward idealism, and attempting to treat life's disillusionment and the trauma suffered by the soul. This became the essence of post-war abstract painting creation.

Abstract painting has three distinctions in expression: 1. Style; 2. Free expression; 3. Harmony. Abstract painting has three distinctions in spirit: 1. Keen sensitivity; 2. Unrestrained impulse; 3. Rigorous structure. {Abstract art is the highest realm of artists' subconscious emotions. It is also the intuitive expression of artists' personal experience. The forms of abstract art include the artist's intuitive grasp of life, being free development unconstrained by concrete external forms. Different appearances are unified by basic forms; this is the factor relating parts to parts, and parts to the whole.}

Anyone in the twentieth century should now understand that the perfection of the essence of all things is merely an illusion. Mathematical (or scientific) knowledge is only theory and criteria. Only the aesthetic view of art can bring us closer to perfection. {The pleasure of aesthetics is the philosophical reaction of truth, the echo of our minds and emotions.} (Refer to Abstract Painting by Michel Seuphor, translated by Ya Mei, published by Lion Publishing in the 63rd year of the Republic of China)
