Early Spring - A Forest Walk, Part One

This weekend was the last of Paris's winter break. The whole family spent it in Orleans visiting relatives who warmly welcomed us. The big wolf-dog and the little white cat were affectionate, staying by our sides as if we had known each other for years. They quickly became close companions, repeatedly seeking our favor. Besides chatting, we played cards with the nephews and saw their pets—little white rabbits, mice, lizards, goldfish, etc.—like a small zoo. Seeing their innocent and lovely demeanor, one could imagine them to be happy. After a rich lunch, cake, and coffee, the whole family, along with the dog, drove to the largest forest in Orleans for a walk. The swollen waters of the Loire River almost submerged the riverbed sandbars and woods. In the distance, the magnificent view of Orleans Cathedral appeared. Passing through small villages into the countryside, forests in late-winter scenery came into view. We parked near the forest where several cars were already there. Walking in the forest at dusk had its own charm. Neatly aligned wide paths led us on; everyone changed into rain boots. Following these main trails, we then turned to familiar smaller paths. The trails were damp but comfortable to walk on without much grass. Carolin, who loves taking photos and videos, and I always brought up the rear. Whether intentionally or not, we seemed to be looking for something to photograph, exchanging opinions and taking pictures of various things. The big wolf-dog always circled around us, often entering the water to play happily and freely. After circling for over two hours, time and space seemed to slow down during the walk. The forest opens the mind, especially in this early spring weather. Thus ended a beautiful and refreshing forest walk, making us Parisians feel more relaxed and at ease. Nature has become an indispensable spiritual food and feast for life today. 2007-03-08
