(Image 1) A scene from the community clearance sale. (Image 2) The thrill of setting up a stall is wildly fun. Every late summer and crisp autumn, every neighborhood in Paris-Métro holds large-scale or mini clearance sales, organized by local associations according to the size of the residential area. For those living nearby, these events occur almost weekly after summer vacation, mostly held in community squares or within a few alleys. All residents or interested individuals can participate. Large-scale sales require prior registration and payment of a cleaning fee to the organizing association for space allocation, while small family-style sales simply involve bringing items on the day to set up a stall, with organizers collecting the fee then.

These community clearance sales resemble flea markets or street stalls. In today's consumer society, everyone has at least some outdated items, objects, and clothes stored away, allowing anything and everything to be sold cheaply. These events proceed in a festive atmosphere, sometimes featuring live performances by bands, musicians, or theater groups, and occasionally communal lunches. It is evident that these sales serve as a time for busy modern society to foster community bonds and exchange goods. Adults meet neighbors or friends, and many children experience the joy of setting up stalls, which may have social educational value. Before winter arrives, these clearance sales and open studio events become one of the key activities in our 13th arrondissement.
